The Forest of Makasutu
Marabout Sang Jatta lives in Makasutu, a holy forest in the Gambia. A forest ranger Jebril tells us that many of the other forest guards have seen a huge-headed lizard looklike creature prowling through the forest at night. Ninkinanka is a fierce creature and when guards encounter the dragon, they scream. If Jebril hears someone scream at night, he knows the reason. It’s Ninkinanka. Old blind Jatta has lived all his life in the woods. He says that he chases malevolent spirits away by surrounding himself with red cloths. When darkness descends, he lights candles and places them along the forest paths. Jebril relates a familiar story. About a hundred years ago, some 30 young boys from the village of Busumbala travelled to Makasutu for a circumcision ceremony. That was the last time anyone ever saw them again. They simply disappeared and no clothes, bones or other relics were ever found. Up to this day, no one knows what happened to these boys. |
